Detectives have arrested a man they described as a key suspect in the killing of George Bengo, the farm manager at retired judge Justice Effie Owuor’s property in Muhoroni.
Senior security officers said the suspect had been handed over to detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, who had travelled to the region to support the inquiry.
Police sources said the man could later be moved to Nairobi to face murder and trespassing charges. Nyanza regional DCI boss Michael Barasa said the case file had already been forwarded to detectives in Nairobi, but he refused to discuss the evidence or identify the suspect, saying that doing so could compromise the investigation.
Regional police boss Leonard Katana said officers were still looking for other people linked to the attack. He also urged calm, saying the matter should remain a criminal case and not be allowed to turn into a community conflict.
Bengo was allegedly lured to the retired judge’s 250-acre farm at Nyangore in Muhoroni before attackers struck him with sharp objects and killed him on the spot. Paul Owuor, the judge’s son, was seriously injured in the same attack on Saturday.
Katana said: “We are glad there has been peace since the incident occurred. We do not want people to let it degenerate into a conflict. This is a criminal act which will be dealt with as per the law.”
