This Reuters report said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had granted Chevron Corp a 2017 hardship waiver from federal biofuel rules for its Utah plant earlier that year, according to a source familiar with the company’s operations.
The waiver put Chevron in a notable position: the oil major, which reported net income of $9.2 billion in 2017, became the largest known company to receive hardship relief from the EPA under the program.
The exemptions had been increasing sharply under the Trump administration, drawing anger from corn-belt farmers who argued that the policy reduced demand for ethanol and other biofuels. The report did not say how Chevron responded to the waiver.
