Police in Bungoma County opened investigations after a 15-year-old girl died following an alleged beating by her parents, in a case that has shocked neighbours in Ndalu.

According to neighbours, the girl had spent Sunday night at her boyfriend’s house before returning home the following day.

Mr Michael Simiyu, a neighbour, told the Nation that the girl was beaten after she got back home. He said the punishment involved both parents and that the child was tied up before the assault.

“He and his wife tied up the girl to punish her. It happened in the afternoon,” Mr Simiyu said.

Relatives and neighbours said the teenager had disappeared in the evening, prompting her parents to look for her. Bungoma North Officer Commanding Police Division Stephen Mwoni said she later resurfaced on Monday.

“The man used sticks to punish his daughter. Unfortunately, she sustained serious injuries,” he said.

She was rushed to Ndalu Health Centre, where she died on arrival. Police took the man’s wife to Ndalu police station as they searched for him.

Mr Mwoni said the suspect would face the law. “The law will catch up with him soon,” he said.

The body was moved to Cottage mortuary, Ndalu.
