Published on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 21:26, South African retailer Shoprite said it had signed leases that will make it an anchor tenant at The Beacon, a new mixed-use mall under construction off Nairobi’s Uhuru Highway.
The company said the agreement with Kiloran Development Group covers almost 4,000 square metres for a flagship store in the development, which is being marketed as The Beacon. The project is expected to measure 28,500 square metres, or 306,771 square feet.
The site is on the eastern side of Uhuru Highway, toward the Bunyala Road roundabout.
In a statement, Shoprite said: “Shoprite has signed up with Kiloran for a flagship store of almost 4,000 square meters in the iconic development ‘The Beacon’ located in the centre of Nairobi,”
Shoprite said it operated 2,811 outlets and employed 148,000 people. It also said it opened 158 new stores in 2017 across 14 countries, creating 4,254 jobs.
The entry of the retail chain into Kenya comes at a time when several supermarket operators have been under pressure from debts and closures. Nakumatt, which was until a few months earlier the country’s biggest retailer, has been the hardest hit.
