On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya said it would begin mentoring high-performing KCPE and KCSE candidates who want to join pharmacy.
The pledge came after the lobby group praised Olive Mwea Wachira, the top pupil countrywide, who has said she wants to pursue the profession. Wachira scored 453 marks out of 500 and shared the top spot with Rawlings Odhiambo.
PSK chair Dr Louis Machogu made the remarks at Riara Primary School, where a group of pharmacists had gone to congratulate Wachira. He said the society would support both KCPE and KCSE candidates who show interest in the field.
Machogu linked the growing interest in pharmacy to the government’s Universal Health Coverage programme, saying the sector should be streamlined so Kenyans can access the highest standards of healthcare.
He also noted that the role of pharmacists has expanded beyond dispensing medicine. According to the article, pharmacists are increasingly serving as medical counsellors, educators and advocates in response to changing health care needs.
