On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi was reported to still be in Italy even after receiving emergency travel documents following the theft of his briefcase at an airport.
A close ally of the governor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Kingi had not yet returned to Kenya. The aide declined to explain why the county boss was still in Italy, but said the required documents had already been issued.
Kingi told the reporter in a WhatsApp message from Rome that his briefcase, which contained two passports and a laptop, was stolen when he arrived in Italy from Brussels on November 17, 2018 for the Hyper Power meeting.
He said he reported the theft to airport police and to the Kenyan embassy in Rome. According to the governor, the embassy later processed emergency travel documents, which he said he received on Monday morning.
“I am glad that the embassy in Rome processed my emergency travel documents. There is therefore no cause for alarm as everything is now fine,” the governor said.
Kingi also attached a photo he said showed the thief walking away with the briefcase. He identified the image as coming from airport CCTV and said it captured the man who stole the documents.
The incident left the governor without his passports until the emergency papers were issued, but he said the matter had been handled and there was no cause for concern.
