On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Pangani Police Station moved to clear its yard by hiring Astorion Auctioneers to dispose of unclaimed matatus, motorcycles and other seized property that had remained in custody for an extended period.
According to a Gazette notice, Astorion Auctioneers representative Kevin Gitau said the firm had been instructed to auction the listed items after they were left unclaimed following impoundment and detention at the station.
The notice warned owners of motor vehicles and motorcycles to collect their property within 30 days. If they failed to do so, the auctioneer would proceed with a public sale on behalf of Pangani Police Station.
Among the vehicles identified for disposal were a Mercedes Benz saloon registered in Uganda, a Volvo saloon, several minibuses, a Nissan caravan, a numberless Mitsubishi trailer and a Nissan saloon.
The auction came after the Office Commanding Pangani Police Station asked the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Makadara for authority to remove what was described as debris from the station yard.
Police usually impound motorcycles during raids when riders abandon them and flee, while motor vehicles are detained for different reasons, including recovery from crime scenes. Some cars are also kept in safe custody until criminal cases are concluded in court.
Other items listed for sale included assorted electronic goods recovered from theft suspects, two gas cylinders, two trolleys, a lorry cabin, four vehicle tyres, a milk can, four ordinary bicycles and eight twisted Y8 iron bars. The notice was set to lapse on December 7, 2018.
