Former Citizen TV news anchor Joey Muthengi was pulled into relationship speculation after saying she was close to footballer McDonald Mariga and intended to move to Italy in January.
The chatter began after the pair appeared together in a betting firm commercial. Their appearance in the advert drew attention, and Muthengi added to the discussion after her resignation from Citizen TV became public.
When asked whether she was dating Mariga, she responded: “Mariga is a cool person and he and I are real friends. I am very fond of him. I will be moving to Italy in January and I guess time will tell what next,” she said when asked if they were dating.
A relative of Mariga dismissed the romance claims and said the footballer was not available. The relative said Mariga was preparing to marry his long-time fiancée, Kenisha, who is also the mother of his daughter, sometime next year in Spain.
The relative also said Mariga had not spoken publicly about the matter. In the same remarks, the relative accused Joey of trying to present the relationship as romantic and said: “We are tired of these slay queen girls trying to break up happy homes.”
The relative added that the last time they saw Mariga was during a holiday in July, when he was with his sister Cynthia, Kenisha and the child.
The claims followed Muthengi’s resignation from Citizen TV and renewed interest in her public appearance with the Kenyan midfielder. The dating allegation was disputed, while the reported wedding plans in Spain were presented by the relative as the true position.
