Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi was robbed at an airport in Italy after travelling from Brussels, Belgium, where he had attended the UN Habitat convention and was heading to a second meeting.
The incident, which happened on Saturday afternoon, disrupted his travel plans and caused him to miss the Kenya Coast Guard Service launch.
Nyakundi Report has seen the account that Kingi gave after the theft. He said: “Unfortunately upon arrival at the airport in Italy on 17th Nov, my briefcase containing my passport and other important documents was stolen. I immediately reported the matter to the airport police and the Kenyan Embassy in Rome,” the governor said.
According to the report, CCTV footage from the airport showed a man walking away with the governor’s briefcase. Kingi said the bag contained his passports and other important documents.
He was later issued with an emergency passport to allow him to return to Kenya while investigations continued.
