On 20 November 2018, police said four suspected terrorists were killed in Ijara, on the border of Lamu and Garissa counties, after security officers confronted them during an operation linked to Boni Forest.
The officers involved were from the Rapid Border Patrol Unit and were operating under the multi-agency Operation Linda Boni, which has been targeting Al-Shabaab suspects believed to be hiding in the forest. According to the report, the gunfight broke out after the group attacked a communication mast in Ijara on Sunday night.
Security teams also recovered six AK-47 rifles from the scene. The report did not say whether any officers were injured in the exchange.
On Monday, Operation Linda Boni director Joseph Kanyiri said the search for other suspects was continuing, including those believed to have escaped with injuries.
“I appeal to the public to report any suspicious characters with bullet wounds or unexplained injuries,” said Mr Kanyiri.
He added that the operation to clear the area of Al Shabaab elements would continue until security was assured.
The killings came five days after Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Kenya Red Cross vehicle and injured a volunteer working with the aid agency.
