On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi was announced as the new ambassador for Africans Rising, the Pan-African movement that says it works for justice, peace and dignity across the continent.
Mwangi shared the news on social media and said his first official duties would begin in Gambia and Tanzania. He added that he would also travel to Ghana and Nigeria before the end of the year.
“I am excited to start my role as @AfricansRising's Ambassador. Heading to Gambia for my first assignment as Africans Rising Ambassador. I will be in Tanzania in early December. Nigeria and Ghana see you mid Dec. I promise to continue shining a light on suffering and injustice,” Mwangi wrote on Twitter.
The activist, who is widely known in Kenya for confronting abuse and public wrongdoing, also came into the spotlight the previous week after he was detained and barred from attending the National Youth Service (NYS) pass out in Gilgil. According to the report, his phone was taken and the photos he had captured were deleted, even though he had presented a media pass.
Mwangi is the father of three.
Nyakundi Report notes that the appointment came at a time when Mwangi was already drawing attention for his clash with authorities over the NYS event.
