On 20 November 2018, Kwale governor Salim Mvurya’s son, Hassan Wanini, emerged as the top KCPE candidate in the Coast region after scoring 440 marks.
Hassan, who sat the exam at Mikaela Academy in Ukunda, is 14 and says he wants to become an engineer. He hopes to join Alliance Boys High School.
His subject breakdown showed strong performance across the board: 89 marks in English, 96 in Kiswahili, 99 in mathematics, 79 in science and 77 in social studies.
The next highest candidate was Mwapheku Bwagizo with 422 marks, followed by Obuyu Mboya on 421.
Headmistress Florence Munke said the school posted a mean score of 354, up from 349 the previous year. She attributed the result to discipline and hard work, saying, “Hard work and discipline have seen this class excel. We can say this year's class has been fair,” she said.
Munke added that out of 45 pupils, only two scored below 300 marks, while nine managed more than 400 marks.
