On 20 November 2018, Gor Mahia’s preparations for their CAF Champions League first-round first leg against Malawi champions Nyasa Bullets were thrown into uncertainty after players declined to report to camp over unpaid salaries.
The Kenyan champions, whose wage bill is about Sh5.5 million, were still waiting for October pay 15 days after the fifth deadline. The squad said they would not resume camp on Tuesday until the money was cleared.
One player, speaking anonymously, said: “We are not going anywhere without our salaries.” Another accused the club of stringing them along, saying: “The management has been giving us empty promises since we came back from Everton.”
The team had been scheduled to travel to Nakuru County on Tuesday for a four-day preseason camp before the match, which was set for Wednesday the following week.
The standoff added to a pattern of sit-ins and training boycotts that had followed K’Ogalo since the closing stages of the previous season, when they won a record-extending 17th league title.
