On 20 November 2018, Nairobi governor Mike Sonko came under pressure after reports emerged that eight members of his executive committee staff were still working even though their contracts had expired and had not been renewed.
The officials were said to be carrying out county government business while their legal status remained unresolved, raising questions about the validity of transactions handled under their watch.
Finance and Economic Planning executive Allan Igambi was quoted saying he had been issued a one-year contract, but was not certain when it ended. “I was given a one year contract but I have to refer to the document to see when it lapsed,” he said.
Members of the county assembly then turned their attention to Acting county attorney David Aseko, accusing him of helping sustain the alleged irregularity and demanding an explanation over the expired appointments.
The dispute added to the wider criticism facing Sonko’s administration in Nairobi, which had already been dogged by repeated accusations of mismanagement.
