Nyakundi Report notes that on 20 November 2018, Braine Lomoin emerged among the standout candidates in the KCPE examination after scoring 428 marks, months after his family was hit by a brutal loss.
The achievement came barely two months after the death of his sister, Maribel Kapolon, the daughter of Githongo Law Courts senior resident Magistrate Caroline Kemei. Her disappearance and killing had left the family in mourning, with the tragedy still fresh when the results were announced.
Maribel, who was 9 years old, went missing on 6 September 2018. It was alleged that she was kidnapped while walking home after being dropped off by the school bus.
Her body was later discovered dumped in Gitoro Forest in Imenti North on 16 September 2018. Reports said the body had cuts on the thighs, one arm appeared to have been burnt with acid, and part of the head had no hair.
Even with that painful backdrop, the KCPE results brought jubilation to the family’s Eldoret home. Braine’s performance stood out in a year when the top candidates were Rawlings Odhiambo and Olive Wachira, who each scored 453 marks.
The family’s ordeal had already drawn public attention, with the killing of the magistrate’s daughter prompting calls for a swift investigation.
