Shock has gripped Gatitu village in Kandara Sub County after Juliano Kanyonyo, a 15-year-old KCPE candidate from Gatitu Primary School, was found dead in his room on Sunday.
The death came just as the family was preparing to celebrate his strong performance in the national exam. Kanyonyo had scored 376 marks, placing him third in his school behind Grace Nyambura, who scored 377, and Henry Mwaura, who topped the school with 382.
According to his uncle, Joseph Kamande, the boy had undergone circumcision last Monday and was nearing the end of his bed rest when he died. Relatives later went to his room on Sunday morning and found him dead, with bloody foam oozing from his mouth.
Kamande said the family was devastated because the boy had appeared healthy and his wounds were almost healed. He added that it was especially painful to receive the good results knowing Kanyonyo would not live to celebrate them.
“I cannot explain the shock we have gone through because he was a perfectly healthy boy and his circumcision wounds were almost healed,” he said.
The body was taken to Thika Level 5 Hospital, where an autopsy was expected to determine the cause of death.
Gatitu Primary School head teacher Robert Muchara also described the pupil as bright and disciplined, and said the school had been left in mourning.

Technology Primary had more than 20 pupils scoring above 400 marks. The top three were Wachira Micky Muchoki with 437, Mwangi Ken Maina with 431, and Nelson Kamunyo with 430.
Other notable results included Bishop Kairo Academy’s first candidate, Laulynn Wambui, who scored 431 marks, Gloria Wanyaga of Green Cottage Academy with 429, and Joan Waiyego of Bishop Perlo Girls Boarding School with 420 marks.
