Hassan Wanini Mvurya emerged as the Coast’s leading performer in the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) after scoring 440 out of 500 marks.
The 14-year-old, who is the son of Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya, was also the best candidate in Kwale County and across the coastal region. He said the result had put him closer to his goal of joining Alliance High School, which he described as the school of his dreams.
Speaking at his family home in Diani on Tuesday, alongside his mother Christine Mvurya, Hassan said he had expected to do even better. He added that he wants to study civil engineering and credited his parents, classmates and teachers for keeping him focused.
Teachers and pupils from Mekaela Likunda School in Ukunda celebrated the result after learning of his performance, then carried the celebrations to the family home. His teacher, Joshua Nzioka, said Hassan had been the strongest pupil in his class since he joined the school and had stayed among the top performers throughout primary school.
“We are very thankful for the sterling performance of the school. We are very proud of Hassan, and his parents for bringing up such a gifted son,” Nzioka said.
Hassan said he was grateful to God, his parents, his teachers and his classmates for the support that helped him post the strong result. “I am very happy and excited that I will finally be able to join the high school of my choice and shape my dream of becoming an engineer,” he said.
Christine Mvurya described her son as disciplined, hardworking and a role model in the family. She said prayer and guidance from God mattered most, adding that she kept encouraging him to believe in his ability to succeed.
