On 20 November 2018, police in Thika West shot dead a suspected robber after a family was held hostage for hours in what the Directorate of Criminal Investigations described as a violent home invasion.
According to the DCI, the dead suspect was part of a group of four people who attacked the house. Officers moved in after a distress call, but the suspects allegedly opened fire on the responding team, forcing the officers to shoot back.
The detectives said three other suspects fled from the scene and were being pursued. A homemade gun, a kitchen knife and a hammer were recovered from the group, items the suspects were allegedly using to intimidate the family.
The DCI account did not give further details on the condition of the family, but the incident ended with one suspect dead and the rest on the run.
