On 20 November 2018, Mwingi sub county in Kitui County was left on edge after a school watchman was killed and another man was left fighting for his life at Kenyatta National Hospital following attacks by unknown people.
The dead man worked at Mwingi Disese Teachers Training College. His killing pushed the number of watchmen murdered under similar circumstances in the area to three within a week, deepening fear among residents.
Mwingi Central MP Dr. Gideon Mulyungi urged authorities to move quickly against the attackers, saying the violence had unsettled the community. Residents also pressed the government to strengthen security and prevent more killings.
Area Deputy County Commissioner Omar Ntima said several people had been arrested in connection with the deaths and added that measures had already been put in place to curb the rising crime.
The latest attack added to growing concern in Mwingi Central, where locals said they wanted a stronger security response before more lives were lost.
