In a report published on 2018-11-20, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) identified the roads in Nairobi that recorded the highest number of fatal crashes over the previous year, while also putting the national road death toll at 365.
The figures cover the period from July 2017 to July 2018. During that span, Mombasa Road emerged as the city’s deadliest road with 42 deaths. Waiyaki Way followed with 38 fatalities, while Outering Road recorded 31. The busy Thika Superhighway also featured among the worst affected routes.
NTSA said weekends were the most dangerous time for road users. Sundays accounted for 79 deaths, Saturdays 58, Fridays 55 and Mondays 48.
The report also broke down the crashes by vehicle type. Private vehicles were involved in 102 accidents, the highest number in the study. Public service vehicles came next with 87, followed by commercial vehicles at 50 and motorcycles at 25.
To curb the deaths, NTSA recommended the construction of more footbridges along the affected roads. The agency said the measure would help reduce fatal accidents on the city’s busiest corridors.
