Three Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidates have died in Homa Bay County within the space of one week, with the deaths linked to childbirth complications, football injuries and a collapse after a match.
It said Faith Atieno Ouko of Kakimba Mixed Secondary in Suba North died at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital after developing complications during delivery. County police boss Marius Tum said she had been taken to the hospital on Sunday before her death was confirmed the following day.
Another candidate, Javan Onyango of DC Mixed Secondary School in Rangwe, died after sustaining serious injuries during a football match. Gem West chief Joel Otieno said the 17-year-old was kicked accidentally by one of his colleagues and suffered injuries to the lower abdomen.
“Information I have is the boy sustained serious injuries on the lower abdomen. It is suspected that someone accidentally kicked him and interfered with his kidney,” said Otieno.
According to the report, Onyango was first rushed to a private health facility in Rodi Kopany Township after collapsing. His condition later worsened, and he was referred to the county referral hospital, where he died.
The third case involved Toddy Otieno of Atemo Mixed Secondary School in Rachuonyo East, who collapsed during a football match early the previous week. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Matata Nursing Home in Oyugis Town.
The report said Otieno and his colleagues had decided to play football after exams when he collapsed.
