On July 18, 2019, Machakos Governor Alfred N. Mutua took swift action to protect the health of residents in the county by ordering the closure of Naivas Supermarket's butchery sections.
The decision was made after a laboratory report revealed that a sample of meat sold at the Naivas Supermarket at Gateway Mall in Mavoko, Machakos County, contained 3.286 milligrams of an additive that should not be used in meat.
According to the report, Governor Mutua directed his officers to collaborate with national government officers to investigate all supermarkets in Machakos County and provide advisory to the public.
The butchery sections will remain closed until given an okay to open by the county's public health department.
Governor Mutua emphasized that his government will continue to protect the health and rights of residents and shut down any businesses found to be polluting and abusing the public trust.
