On 20 November 2018, ODM’s disciplinary committee recommended that Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and Msambweni MP Suleiman Dori be expelled from the party after finding them guilty of breaching party rules.
The panel, chaired by lawyer Fred Athuok, was set to brief party leader Raila Odinga before forwarding its report to the party National Executive Council (NEC). If Raila approved the recommendation, NEC was expected to adopt it and clear the way for the two lawmakers to be struck off the party membership roll.
An ODM insider familiar with the matter told The Standard: “The disciplinary committee will meet the party leader this morning to hand over its report; they have basically recommended the expulsion of the rebels.”
The two MPs had been linked to the so-called Tanga Tanga team, which was campaigning for Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid. That association formed part of the tension between the legislators and ODM’s leadership.
The same disciplinary action was also looming over five Homa Bay MCAs who had been indicted for assaulting Speaker Elizabeth Ayoo.
