Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has removed county executive member Halima Gababa from the Sports, Youth and Gender docket after a finding of gross misconduct. The decision was announced on Monday, November 19, 2018, following a disciplinary process that had already seen her suspended for 60 days.
In the statement, Kinyanjui said Trade, Cooperatives and Tourism executive committee member Peter Ketyenya would take over the role in an acting capacity. The governor said the investigations had been completed and had established that Gababa was liable for gross misconduct.
The action followed pressure from angry youth, who had petitioned the county assembly to investigate her conduct. They accused her of violating the law and failing to diligently perform the duties and powers of her office as required.
“Investigations were done and upon completion, have revealed that Ms Gababa was liable for gross misconduct,” read the statement.
News of the dismissal was welcomed by youth leaders, who said they wanted a replacement who would be more responsive to their concerns. One of them, identified as Mr Kimani, said the governor had finally listened to their complaints and urged him to avoid making the same mistake again.
The group also alleged that Gababa had ignored their representative when he went to her office to ask about a volleyball tournament. Their complaint formed part of the wider push that led to the probe and eventual removal.
