On 6 June 2018, Fred Matiang’i said Kenya belongs to all citizens and warned against the idea that holding government office makes anyone more Kenyan than others.

In the remarks carried in the archived video, Matiang’i said: “Kenya is our only home on earth, you are not more Kenyan than others because you are in the government, let us find a way of working together.”

The statement framed his appeal around cooperation and equal citizenship, with the message directed at political and public office holders who may be tempted to treat state power as a measure of national belonging.
