On 2 May 2016, a report said police were looking into claims that three gangs were operating inside a university campus, with bhang, knives and machetes allegedly found in the process.

The report said Prof Peter Mbithi declined to speak about the matter. It also quoted the police chief as saying the investigation was still ongoing, without giving further details at the time.

The allegations pointed to a serious security problem on campus, with the reported recovery of drugs and weapons raising questions about how the groups were operating inside the institution.
