Uhuru Kenyatta’s first grandchild, baby Wanjiru, was expected to turn three in 2019, according to the archive report published on 2019-06-29. The child was born in November 2017 at Aga Khan Hospital to Jomo Kenyatta Jnr and his wife, Fiona Achola.
Wanjiru was named after First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, and the report said she had only been seen publicly once before, when she was six months old and attended her parents’ white wedding.
The article also revisited the couple’s 2016 traditional wedding ceremony at Uhuru’s rural home in Ichaweri, Gatundu. During the Itara ceremony, Achola was received by her mother, Ruth Omamo, before being handed over to her mother-in-law, Margaret Kenyatta, and later escorted to her new home by relatives amid ululations and cheers.
According to the report, the bride was later adorned by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law Ngina before receiving gifts from her aunts. Guests at the ceremony included Senator Beth Mugo, Kristina Pratt, Nyokabi Muthama, Anna, Pip, Christine Gakuo, and Defence CS Raychelle Omamo.
Uhuru’s mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, was described as visibly happy as the family welcomed what the report called a new “co-wife,” a reference to Jomo being named after her husband. In a brief speech to guests, Uhuru said:
“Now that my son has his own home it’s a sign we are ageing and we shall have to hand over some of the authority to the young people, but it comes with responsibilities.”
The white wedding that followed was kept tightly controlled. A source quoted in the report said guests were asked to save the date for April 8, but venue details were not initially shared. The location was later said to be State House, where guests reportedly went through security screening, phones were barred, and only official camera crews were allowed inside.
Another source said the privacy was deliberate because Jomo and Achola were not seeking political office and did not need publicity for the occasion. The ceremony reportedly used baby pink as its theme, included fireworks after the vows, and ended with a reception at the same venue. The guest list was said to include close political allies, friends of the couple, family members, and a few celebrities.
The report further noted that the couple’s six-month-old baby at the time was present during the lavish ceremony.
