On June 29, 2019, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i declared that the government will not renew licenses for certain betting firms, stating that betting has led to a decline in people's focus on nation-building activities.
Matiang'i made these remarks during a fundraiser at Mekonge SDA Church in Kitutu Chache North, where he emphasized that no nation has developed due to its people's concentration on gambling. He stressed that this trend must be discouraged at all costs, saying,
No nation has ever developed because its people concentrated on gambling. This one must be discouraged at all costs.
The government has committed to ensuring the Sh450 billion allocated for development this financial year is spent prudently. Kisii Governor James Ongwae expressed support for Matiang'i, praising his ability to streamline the national government. Ongwae stated,
Matiang'i has done a wonderful job in all ministries he has served in. The leaders of Kisii and Nyamira are ready to support him.
National Assembly Deputy Majority Leader Jimmy Angwenyi warned Gusii legislators fighting Matiang'i not to interfere in his constituency, suggesting that Matiang'i might be a surprise candidate supported by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022. Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka noted that the Gusii Community seeks inclusion in sharing the national cake, citing their economic prosperity and desire for greater political consideration.
