Botswana's President Mokgweetsi Masisi is taking a different approach to international relations than his predecessor Ian Khama, who was known for his independent stance on the African diplomatic stage. In an interview with The EastAfrican published on June 29, 2019, Masisi expressed his desire to build relations across the globe.

Shifting Relations with Zimbabwe

In 2014, Khama skipped a ceremony where then-Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe took over the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community, accusing Mugabe of rigging elections. In contrast, Masisi has no issue with President Emmerson Mnangagwa's election in July 2018 and has even accepted an invitation to attend a Wildlife Summit in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

A New Approach to International Relations

Masisi's administration has also been making efforts to improve ties with other global powers, including China. In 2013, Botswana tried to block Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta from visiting the country while on trial at the International Criminal Court. However, in 2016, Kenya and Botswana relations grew warmer after the case was dismissed.

In 2017, Khama had invited the Dalai Lama to visit Botswana, a move that was met with opposition from China. However, Masisi has taken a more nuanced approach, stating that Botswana is comfortable with its relationship with China and determines who it relates with and how.

Foreign Policy and Conservation

Masisi has outlined his foreign policy approach, which prioritizes the protection of Botswana's values, peace, and prosperity. He also emphasized the importance of multilateralism and the United Nations charter in maintaining world peace and order. Additionally, Masisi has been vocal about the need to lift the ban on the ivory trade, stating that Botswana cannot continue to be spectators while others debate and take decisions about its elephants.
