The African Cup of Nations, currently underway in Egypt, marks a historic moment for East Africa, with four teams from the region participating in the tournament for the first time since 1968.
The modern African Cup of Nations was launched in 1968, but the tournament has its roots in 1957, when it was first held with only three participating nations: Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. This year, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Kenya are flying the flag for the East African Community, with nearly 67% of its member states represented.

The presence of these four teams is a testament to the region's growing football prowess, with Uganda having previously participated in the 2017 edition and narrowly losing to Ghana in the 1978 final. Burundi's participation is particularly noteworthy, given the country's turbulent history, especially since 2015 when President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid for a president-for-life position plunged the nation into violent conflict.
The tournament has also highlighted the issue of sports betting, with numerous ads promoting betting enterprises. This has raised concerns about the social and economic implications of sports betting on the region's population, with some countries seeking to regulate or ban the industry. Kenyan blogger Chris Orwa has noted the prevalence of betting on football matches, including obscure leagues, and even strange dog races.

The intersection of football and politics is also evident in the region, with President Nkurunziza's bid for a president-for-life position being a notable example. The Eternal Supreme Guide's move was not the first, nor will it be the last, attempt by an East African leader to consolidate power. However, his failure to successfully navigate the constitutional process has been seen as a significant misstep.
As the tournament progresses, the region will be watching with bated breath, eager to see which team will emerge victorious. With their impressive performance, the Uganda Cranes are a strong contender, but the competition is fierce, and any of the four teams could potentially take the top prize.
