A dramatic turn of events unfolded on Friday night when a Nairobi Member of County Assembly was arrested in connection with a heroin seizure at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in April 2019.

As reported on June 29, 2019, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrest of the Ngei Ward representative, who will be charged on Monday with the offence of Trafficking in Narcotics. According to the DCI, the arrest followed the confiscation of a consignment containing heroin at JKIA on April 19, 2019.

The DCI stated,

“Hon. Redson Otieno Onyanga, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Ngei Ward was today (Friday) evening arrested by @DCI_Kenya Detectives following the confiscation of a consignment containing #Heroin at JKIA on 19th April ‘19. He’ll be charged with the offence of Trafficking in Narcotics,”

The arrest comes on the heels of another high-profile case involving Former presidential candidate Jaffer Isaak, who was arrested in Marsabit with 445 kilograms of bhang worth Sh13.3 million. Jaffer, who vied for the presidency in 2013, was apprehended two weeks prior to the MCA's arrest.

The incidents highlight the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Kenya, with law enforcement agencies working to disrupt and dismantle illicit drug networks.
