Principal Secretary Mariam El Maawy, a native of Lamu's Bajuni community, has died after being shot by Al-Shabaab militants in an attack on July 13, 2017.
According to State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu, El Maawy was heading to Witu areas to visit families evicted due to increased terror attacks in the region.
She was abducted at Milihoi area on the Mpeketoni-Lamu road and later rescued by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with bullet injuries in the back, left shoulder, hand, and legs.
El Maawy was airlifted to Nairobi for treatment and later transferred to South Africa, where she passed away.
Her nephew, who was with her at the time of the attack, also lost his life.
