On July 18, 2019, Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed's government marked a significant milestone in the country's democratic journey. Since assuming power, Dr. Abiy has championed a vision of a democratic Ethiopia, built on the principles of Medemer, a vibrant economy, regional integration, and openness to the world.

Dr. Abiy's leadership has been characterized by a commitment to reform and a willingness to engage with the international community. His government has taken bold steps to address historical injustices, fight corruption, and establish institutional frameworks to ensure success in the 2020 national elections.

One of the most notable achievements of Dr. Abiy's government has been the establishment of a Reconciliation Commission, tasked with addressing decades-old setbacks and promoting a positive national tone. The commission's work has been instrumental in encouraging a culture of forgiveness and reconciliation in Ethiopia.

Dr. Abiy's government has also taken significant steps to promote gender balance and national inclusion. The reformist government has mitigated historical risk-weighted elements, rebalanced gender, and rethought regional geographical security, all while putting in place architectures to ensure good governance, growth, and prosperity.

Today, Ethiopia is a nation in transition, with a myriad of nation-building elements in place. The involvement of former dissidents in the government has been a key factor in this transition, and the country has reached out to Kenya to learn best practices on truth, justice, and reconciliation.

As the Ethiopian ambassador to Kenya, Dr. Meles Alem Tikea, notes, 'there are thousands of good things the reformist has done, will do, and continues to pursue.' While challenges remain, Dr. Abiy's government has made significant progress in its pursuit of a democratic Ethiopia.
