The government has extended the dusk to dawn curfew in Marsabit by thirty days due to increased insecurity in the region.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi stated that the extension will enable the ongoing operation in Marsabit to meet its targets.
According to Matiangi, there shall be no public gatherings, processions, or movements during the curfew period, except as permitted in writing by the Inspector General of the National Police Service.
The extension excludes the Kom Durte area of Isiolo County, which was previously included in the curfew.
A General Service Unit commander, who led a security operation in Laikipia in 2021, is overseeing the operation in Marsabit.
The government had initially imposed a 30-day curfew in Marsabit, citing ongoing criminal activities, including those linked to terrorism.
Matiangi also ordered a crackdown on illegal mining activities, which he believes are funding terrorist groups.
"We have noticed a nexus between the proliferation of illegal firearms in Marsabit and some activities in the neighboring Isiolo County. There are some illegal mining activities that are going on and seem to be funding terrorists," Matiangi said.
