On May 31, 2022, the Football Association (FA) announced that Everton manager Frank Lampard had been fined £30,000 for criticising the referee during a Merseyside derby match against Liverpool.
Lampard's criticism came after referee Stuart Attwell failed to award a penalty for a challenge on Everton's Anthony Gordon, which the manager believed would have been given had the challenge been made on a Liverpool player.
The FA had earlier charged Lampard with improper conduct for attacking the integrity of referees, but he denied the charge and was subsequently fined for breaching FA Rule E3 in relation to media comments proven during a personal hearing.
Lampard took over as Everton manager in January, leading the team to secure their top-flight status in the penultimate game of the season and finishing 16th in the Premier League.
