On July 18, 2019, Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad made a significant announcement regarding the Champions League and Confederation Cup finals. Starting from the next season, both competitions will feature a single final match.

This change marks a departure from the previous format, where the Champions League and Confederation Cup had separate finals. The first-ever CAF Champions League final, previously known as the African Cup of Champions Clubs, took place in 1965 between Oryx Douala and Stade.
