On May 28th, a reveler shared a disturbing video on social media, alleging that Alchemist club in Westlands, Nairobi, had a barrier to prevent black people from mixing with whites and Indians.
The club, linked to unscrupulous business deals, was on the spot in 2016 after its security team denied entry to non-Caucasian clients.
Following the viral video, Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu issued an executive order for the club's immediate closure, citing the need to protect the county's image and future.
'We have an image to protect and the future, I have directed the county executive committee member for environment to institute a multiagency task force and a comprehensive report of the same to be made in the next 5 days,' Kananu said.
The club has been shut down, and ten officials, including the manager, have been arraigned at the Nairobi City Court, charged with contravening licensing provisions and propagating social discrimination.
Nairobi City County Executive for Environment Larry Wambua confirmed that Governor Kananu ordered the immediate closure and cancellation of the club's license.
'We must protect our county, which exercises immense respect to all social races and strongly stands against any form of discrimination and noisy pollution,' Wambua said.
