On December 12, 2017, Nairobi Governor Mik Mbuvi Sonko's speech during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kasarani left Deputy President William Ruto in stitches.
According to protocol, the governor was supposed to invite all attendees, including VIPs, before proceeding with the ceremony. However, Sonko mistakenly failed to recognize First Lady Margaret Kenyatta's attendance, attributing it to President Uhuru Kenyatta's mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, who was not present at the event.
His speech read: 'You Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, Your Excellency First Lady Mama Ng'ina Kenyatta, Your Excellency William Ruto.'
Noting the mistake, Mr. Ruto couldn't help but laugh.
Mama Ngina Kenyatta was Kenya's First Lady from 1963 to 1978, following the death of the country's first president, Jomo Kenyatta.
