On May 30, 2022, the Kenyan government announced a significant allocation of Ksh2.4 billion to combat neglected tropical diseases in the country.
This move is part of the government's efforts to mitigate the effects of these diseases and develop and scale up Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
According to Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache, statistics show that 25 million Kenyans are at risk of getting these diseases.
Mochache emphasized the government's commitment to exploring innovative ways to accelerate progress toward ending Neglected Tropical Diseases by 2030.
The government is scaling up the mapping of these diseases to allocate sufficient resources and apply treatment where cases have been identified.
Health experts have cited poverty as a major factor contributing to many Kenyans' inability to access quality and affordable healthcare services.
