On May 30, 2022, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared Governor Sospeter Ojaamong to contest the Teso South MP seat on an ODM ticket.
After submitting his nomination papers to Amukura IEBC Returning Officer Carol Okki, Ojaamong was cleared following a one-hour session.
This development means that Teso South ODM MP Geoffrey Omuse will now defend his seat on an independent ticket, having earlier indicated he would not face off with the governor in ODM nominations due to concerns of being "rigged out".
Former MP Mary Emaase (UDA) will submit her nomination papers on Tuesday.
As he seeks to transition to national politics, Governor Ojaamong, who is serving his second and final term, has emphasized the need for economic liberation and job creation for the youth.
"Our number one agenda is economic liberation of our people. We need to put our heads together so that we revamp the construction industries to create jobs for our youth," he said.
With a long history in politics, Governor Ojaamong was first elected as MP for Amagoro Constituency in 2002, a seat he held until it was split into Teso North and South constituencies.
He was re-elected in 2007 and later went on to contest the Busia gubernatorial seat in 2013.
