On May 30, 2022, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) made a significant move in the fight against corruption by arresting six Makueni Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and the Clerk of Assembly for their alleged involvement in a Sh175,000 per diem scam.
The six MCAs, Timothy Sirei Maneno, Bernard Wambua, Cosmas Mutunga, Bensley Mwania, John Muli, and Bernard Muthoka, along with the then Clerk of Assembly, Edward Libendi, are accused of fraudulently claiming and receiving Sh175,018.50 each as per diem for a private trip to Dubai in 2014.
The Dubai trip, which took place from April 14 to 21, 2014, was fully sponsored by the then MP Patrick Musimba. However, upon their return, the MCAs allegedly claimed and received the per diem payments, which they were not entitled to.
The suspects are set to be arraigned in Machakos Law Courts on a date to be determined for plea taking.
