Moses Kuria Slams Push for Constitutional Reforms ¶
Mbunge wa Gatundu Kusini Moses Kuria has come out strongly against the push for constitutional reforms, saying they will not benefit the ordinary Kenyan in any way.
According to Kuria, the proposed constitutional reforms are a ploy by a few individuals to grab leadership positions.
Speaking on the proposed reforms, Kuria said that if there are any changes to be made, they should be done in conjunction with the 2022 general elections and not before.
He argued that holding a referendum before the 2022 elections would disrupt the lives of Kenyans.
"Mnataka kubadilisha katiba ili mjipe mamlaka? Ni sawa, lakini msubiri miaka mitano kuishi ili mfanye hivyo," Kuria said in a statement.
He also suggested that the positions of Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) and Senators should be abolished.
Kuria urged lawmakers to work diligently to bring about the necessary reforms before the 2022 elections.
He emphasized the need to abolish the Senate, citing it as one of the key reforms needed.
On the other hand, ODM leader Raila Odinga and his supporters, including Senator James Orengo, have been pushing for a referendum on constitutional changes.
"Tuna katiba mpya ndio. Lakini ilivyo na katiba zingine kote duniani, zinahitaji kufanyiwa majaribio baada ya miaka nane ili kujua kilicho sawa na kile ambacho si sawa kwa watu wetu. Tunastahili kujua iwapo ugatuzi unawwanufaisha raia, iwapo baraza la mawaziri ni kubwa, maswala ya mazingira na mengineyo. Hii ndio sababu tunataka mabadiliko ya katiba na hakuna anayeweza kuzuia," Raila said last year.
