On a night out in Nairobi's Parklands area, one would expect to find a vibrant atmosphere, good music, and a welcoming crowd. However, for some patrons, this was not the case in May 2022.
A leaked video revealed a disturbing scene at the Alchemist Club, where black Kenyans were forced to line up in a separate queue from white people and Indians.
According to the video, a black Kenyan was instructed to leave a line dedicated to white people and Indians and join the line for blacks. This segregation was not limited to the queue; black patrons were also barred from using the same door as their white or Indian counterparts.
Shamefully, the club bouncers enforcing these racist rules were black Kenyans themselves.
This is not the first time the Alchemist Club has faced allegations of racism. In August 2018, the club apologized to a customer who claimed to have been racially abused by the bouncers.
As reported in the media, the club's management acknowledged the incident and apologized for any hurt caused. However, it seems that the club has failed to learn from its past mistakes.
The latest incident is just one of several shameful cases of racism reported in Nairobi. On May 29, 2022, a Kenyan woman and her friends were kicked out of a restaurant to make way for an Arab man and his daughter.
