Gertrude Mbeyu, the Kilifi Woman Representative, made a rare admission on May 29, 2022, about her poor development record since her election in August 2017.
Confronted by angry constituents in Malindi, Mbeyu defended her track record, claiming that her efforts to develop the constituency were hindered by her fallout with Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa.
The lawmaker cited the Ganda ward by-election as the source of their differences, which led to a breakdown in their working relationship.
Since the fallout, Mbeyu has only been able to work with members of the County Assembly (MCAs), particularly Nixon Muramba and Kadenge Mwathethe.
"I ask you for forgiveness, Malindi people. I ask for forgiveness. Your MP blocked me from performing. You remember the Ganda ward by-election violence since then I have not been able to deliver," Mbeyu stated.
She also warned that rejecting her would lead to voting for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) or a Women Representative from the People's Assembly Alliance (PAA).
Mbeyu has faced hostile crowds on several occasions, including a rally where she accompanied Raila Odinga, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader.
At the event, Mbeyu asked Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to allow her to rebuild her name in Malindi by holding events with women and youth.
"I ask my brother Joho to allow me to come back to Malindi and organize town hall meetings with Women in Malindi so as to ask for forgiveness for Mbeyu," she added.
