Angela Okutoyi, the Kenyan tennis sensation, made a stunning start to her French Open campaign, defeating Belgian Amelie Van Impe in straight sets.
Okutoyi, the African junior champion, faced a tough match but managed to rally back from a difficult start, trailing 3-1 before leveling the score.
At the tie break, Okutoyi found herself two set points down, but her determination and belief pulled her through, winning 8-6.
She carried her momentum into the second set, winning 6-4 to book a place in the round of 32, where she will face off against Croatian Petra Marcinko.
Okutoyi attributed her victory to her focus on her game and staying true to herself, saying, "I focused more on what I could do myself and just being me and that’s how I managed to rally back. In the second set I tried to be on the lead always and also tried to break her,"
She also acknowledged the challenging crowd atmosphere, stating, "There was a lot of crowd and they were against me but it was good."
