On May 29, 2022, Kipruto arap Kirwa, the former Vice Chairman of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), announced his defection to Azimio La Umoja One Kenya at a rally in Bungoma County, accompanied by Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua.
Kirwa cited a lack of democracy within UDA as the reason for his decision, specifically expressing dissatisfaction with the way Deputy President William Ruto picked Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate.
‘That (decision) shows there’s no democracy in UDA,’ Kirwa told the rally.
He is the second UDA official to defect in less than two months, following former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara, who was the party’s treasurer.
Ms Karua described Kirwa as a dedicated leader who has always championed the well-being of Kenyans.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said Kirwa’s defection is a clear indication that Azimio La Umoja One Kenya is winning the August 9 polls.
