On May 30, 2022, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) announced that it had begun targeting properties acquired by six current and former governors, alleging that they were acquired fraudulently.
The governors in question include Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria, Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal, Migori Governor Okoth Obado, and two former Nairobi Governors, Mike Sonko and Evans Kidero.
According to EACC, the properties in dispute are worth an estimated Sh10 billion, with Kidero's properties valued at Sh9 billion and Sonko's properties valued at Sh1 billion.
The EACC detectives and lawyers are currently tying up loose ends before pursuing recovery funds for assets it believes Sonko and Kidero illegally acquired.
Besides the six, EACC is also profiling half of sitting governors over their unexplained wealth.
“The commission has charged Kidero and Sonko over unexplained wealth which EACC believes was amassed illicitly. The commission also has its eyes on about half of the governors because many of them have wealth which they cannot explain,” EACC spokesperson Yasin Amaro said.
