On 1st June 2022, President Suluhu Samia appointed Sauda Kassim Msemo as the new Deputy Governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), a position that takes effect immediately.
Msemo, a seasoned finance expert, previously served as Commissioner for External Finance at the Ministry of Finance and Planning. She becomes the second woman in the country's history to hold the position of Deputy Governor.
As Deputy Governor, Msemo will work alongside BoT Governor, Prof. Florens Luoga, who was awarded the Central Banker of the Year award for Africa in 2021 for his efforts to boost the country's economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under Prof. Luoga's leadership, the BoT has received accolades for its clampdown on irresponsible lending, reduction of non-performing loan levels, and plans to launch a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
The BoT has also been recognized for its monetary policy stance, which has eased lending restrictions and boosted credit for small businesses, helping to combat the effects of COVID-19.
