Tragedy struck on the Kilifi-Mombasa Highway on Sunday evening when Rabai Member of Parliament William Kamoti was involved in a fatal road accident.

According to Kilifi North police boss Jonathan Koech, the accident occurred at the notorious Komaza black-spot at around 9:40 pm.

Just hours before the accident, the IEBC had cleared MP Kamoti to defend his seat on an Orange Democratic Movement party ticket in the August 9 polls.

Friends and family of the late MP gathered at the Kilifi County Hospital Funeral Home where his body was taken on Sunday night.

Witnesses reported that the MP's vehicle was hit by a lorry, causing it to roll. The driver, who sustained injuries, is currently admitted to the Kilifi County Referral Hospital.

Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire described the late MP as a great leader who had been a driving force in Kilifi County.

"We were in contact with him as he presented his documents to IEBC today. The first responders at the scene said the (MP's) vehicle rolled after it was hit by a truck," Mr Mwambire said.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi also paid tribute to the late MP, describing him as a devoted and hardworking leader who will be remembered for his non-confrontational leadership style.
