On Sunday, May 29, 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta made a significant announcement at State House, Nairobi, during the 92nd inspection parade of the St John Ambulance Kenya. He emphasized the importance of appreciating volunteerism and its impact on the country, stating that the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) would inculcate this practice into future leaders.
President Kenyatta called upon government institutions to grant preference to interns and attachés with certified volunteer experience from organizations like St. John Ambulance. He explained that by valuing volunteerism, the country would be nurturing a higher sense of civic responsibility among its leaders.
The President was also honored with an award by Queen Elizabeth, who knighted him to the Order of St John for his service to humanity. In his response, President Kenyatta expressed gratitude and pledged to continue serving humanity, both in Kenya and globally.
President Kenyatta praised St John Ambulance for its contributions to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and its provision of ambulance and paramedical services since its inception in Kenya in 1923. He announced a Ksh50 million annual government sponsorship for the organization, starting with Ksh100 million in the current financial year.
As part of its efforts, St John Ambulance is working on a program to offer first aid training to road users, with a pilot program aiming to train 200 bodaboda riders.
